What is a bedside cot?
A bedside crib (also called a bassinet or co-sleeper) is a small baby crib that can be attached to your adult bed, allowing your infant to sleep safely next to you. It's a method of co-sleeping that is safe and does not increase the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) like bedsharing and can help you bond with your newborn.
The cots usually have a side that can be adjusted so that you can easily reach your newborn during the night for feeding and comforting. This is particularly beneficial for mothers who are recovering from an op. Many of them are portable or foldable, so you can bring them along on trips and use them as a temporary sleep solution for infants who aren't yet ready to move to a larger cot.
Choose a crib that has a breathable mattress, and an appropriate cover to shield your baby from stains. You might also want to purchase some baby-safe accessories like a blanket or teether.
If you're looking for a longer-term alternative, some cribs are equipped with conversion kits that let you turn them into a cot or toddler bed at the time of need. This will prolong their life and make the transition smoother. Some have a removable top section that converts into a bassinet, while others can be used as a regular or a high-rise adult bed. This is an excellent choice for families who intend to travel frequently or change between bedrooms at night. You should also consider the size of your room to ensure that you can fit the crib comfortably. Many cribs come with a riser which can be used to create an inclined position for babies who suffer from reflux.
